When a published YouTube video contains an inaccurate product fact, verify the exact claim, send the creator supporting evidence, and agree on a correction viewers can find. Check what YouTube Studio allows before asking for an edit. A description correction, a cut, or a new upload has different consequences. Keep the request limited to the factual error and leave fair criticism intact.
Confirm what was wrong at publication
Watch the disputed section with the sentences before and after it. Record the video URL, timestamp, spoken claim, and any matching on-screen text. A transcript alone can miss a visual qualification or mishear a product name.
Then check the product version the creator received. Use the manual, packaging, specifications, or dated offer terms that applied when the video went live. A later software update or changed bundle may call for an update notice rather than an admission of an original error.
Use this classification before contacting the creator:
| Type | Hypothetical example | Proposed response |
|---|---|---|
| Verifiable error | The video says a stand is included; that package sells it separately. | Supply the package contents and request a correction. |
| Fair opinion | The creator finds the controls awkward. | Record the feedback; do not request a positive rewrite. |
| Disputed test result | The creator reports shorter battery life than your laboratory figure. | Compare settings and conditions before calling it inaccurate. |
| Later product change | A feature arrived after the creator published. | Ask whether a dated update would help viewers. |
The recommendation to preserve fair opinion also fits the FTC's guidance on truthful endorsements. In the U.S. context, paid endorsers cannot describe a bad experience as a good one or invent claims requiring evidence the advertiser lacks. The FTC says U.S. law can also apply to posts from abroad when effects on U.S. consumers are reasonably foreseeable.
For review-unit relationships, use the separate guide to protecting editorial independence. A correction request should specify the statement you can disprove without turning into a new approval round for the whole review.
Choose a correction the upload can support
These are response options, not a rule that every mistake needs the same remedy. Ask the creator to check the affected upload in Studio. Public documentation does not establish that a particular channel can use every feature.
Add a timestamped correction
YouTube's video settings instructions describe a correction format in the description. The creator adds Correction: or Corrections: in English, even if the rest of the description uses another language. A separate line contains the timestamp and explanation. This section belongs after any video chapters.
For the hypothetical package error above, the text could read:
Correction:
2:14 The stand is sold separately. It is not included in the standard package shown in this video.YouTube says this format produces a View Corrections info card. It also lists eligibility limits. The feature is unavailable when the channel has active strikes or the content may be inappropriate to some viewers.
This option preserves the spoken footage. Decide whether a viewer who misses the correction could still make a consequential mistake. Do not assume every viewer will open the description or notice the card. If the feature is unavailable, agree on another way to present the correction; do not promise the card will appear.
Cut the inaccurate section
YouTube's trimming documentation says creators can remove a beginning, middle, or ending section on a computer. The URL, view count, and comments stay the same. The feature applies to videos shorter than six hours.
There are restrictions. An unedited video with more than 100,000 views may prevent saving changes, except for channels in the YouTube Partner Program. Ask the creator to confirm availability before agreeing to a cut.
Preview both sides of the proposed removal. Cutting one sentence could leave a product demonstration without its warning or make the next sentence misleading. Keep an original copy and agree on the cut boundaries before saving. YouTube states that saved Studio Editor changes cannot be undone through Revert to original, a change effective from June 2025.
Publish a corrected upload
If the error needs new spoken explanation or a corrected demonstration, discuss a new upload. YouTube does not let creators replace an uploaded video file; a new upload gets a new URL.
Agree on what happens to the original and which existing links need updating. Do not start by demanding deletion. YouTube says deletion is permanent. A minor package-detail error and a dangerous usage instruction warrant different decisions about keeping the original available.
For a safety-related error, contact the creator and your product-safety or legal owner promptly. Explain the specific risk and discuss limiting continued exposure while the correction is prepared. This is an operational escalation recommendation, not a universal legal procedure.
Send one bounded request
The message should contain the evidence, the requested wording, and a proposed response time. Ask for confirmation of the method rather than assuming the creator can replace footage in place.
Here is a hypothetical message for the package example:
Subject: Package contents correction at 2:14
Thanks for sharing the video. At 2:14, it says the stand comes with the standard package. The package shown contains the main unit and cable; the stand is sold separately. The attached package-contents sheet is the version we sent before filming.
Could you add a timestamped correction stating that the stand is sold separately? Please check whether the Corrections feature is available for this upload. If that will not give viewers enough context, could we discuss cutting the sentence?
Your comments about the controls can stay unchanged. We are asking to correct the package contents only.
Please confirm the proposed method and timing by tomorrow afternoon. If our brief caused the confusion, we will correct it and discuss the additional work with you.
In a real request, attach or link the actual evidence and give an explicit date and time zone. The response time in this example is a proposal, not a YouTube requirement or an automatic contractual deadline.
If the creator disputes your evidence, compare versions before repeating the demand. If they confirm the error but cannot make the proposed edit, choose another option together. Record who supplied the incorrect information. When your own brief caused it, acknowledge that before discussing cost or responsibility.
Check the live result and close the request
Keep the correction open until someone checks the published result:
- Replay the affected section and check the surrounding context.
- Read the correction in the description and check the info card if that was the agreed method.
- Check whether the title, thumbnail, or other product references repeat the same error.
- After a cut, recheck timestamps and chapters against the edited video.
- If there is a new upload, record both URLs and update links your team controls.
- Save the final wording, completion time, and the creator's confirmation.
Keep sponsorship disclosure separate from the product correction. For endorsements affecting U.S. consumers, the FTC guidance says video disclosures belong in the video itself. A description correction does not resolve a missing in-video disclosure. Use the YouTube paid promotion disclosure guide for that separate review.
Finally, correct the source document that fed the mistake. Modash's YouTube briefing article recommends sharing product information and discussing the brief with the creator before filming. Add the verified package contents or limitation to your next YouTube integration brief, then send the updated version to anyone using the old one.
