How the rate is calculated

Engagement rate = (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100, averaged over the 12 most recent posts. Pinned posts are skipped because an account pins its best work, and posts that hide their like count are skipped because a hidden count is not zero.

The median post is the middle value of the same 12 rates. When the mean is far above the median, one or two posts went viral and the median is the number to put in a brief.

Reels are also measured by views: average reel views ÷ followers. Instagram shows reels to people who do not follow the account, so the view rate is often above 100% for small accounts and tells you reach, not loyalty.

The percentile compares the account with 431,494 public Instagram accounts of 1,000+ followers in Virev's own crawl, each measured the same way on its 12 most recent posts (crawl window Jul to Oct 2026).

What is a good Instagram engagement rate

It depends on size. Half of the accounts with 1k to 10k followers are above 3.0%; half of the accounts with over 1M followers are below 0.8%. The table is the distribution from our crawl, so you can read "above p75" as "better than three accounts in four of that size".

Warning signs the tool checks

  • Comments per 100 likes below the bottom 10% of the size tier. Likes are cheap to buy; comments are not.
  • A follower change of 20% or more between two of our crawls less than 30 days apart.
  • A mean at least twice the median, which means one post carries the number.
  • Posts that hide like counts, no post in 90 days, and fewer than 6 usable posts.

These are flags to check, not verdicts. A creator who went viral last month will trip the follower-jump check for a real reason.

Questions people ask

How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?
Add the likes and comments on a post, divide by the account's followers, multiply by 100. Do that for the last 12 posts and average the results. An account with 20,000 followers whose posts average 400 likes and 12 comments has (400 + 12) ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 2.06%.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Above the median for the account's size. In Virev's crawl the median is 3.0% at 1k to 10k followers, 1.7% at 10k to 50k, 1.2% at 100k to 500k and 0.8% above 1M. The top quarter of each tier is roughly 2.5 times the median.
Should engagement rate use followers or views?
Use followers to compare accounts, because every account has a follower count and most do not show post reach. Use views for reels when you buy reach: this tool shows average reel views ÷ followers next to the follower-based rate.
Why do big accounts have lower engagement rates?
Followers accumulate for years; the people who still see and like each post are a shrinking share of them. Instagram also ranks posts from very large accounts into fewer feeds. In our data the median falls from 3.0% to 0.8% between the 1k to 10k and 1M+ tiers.
Does the calculator work for private accounts?
No. Instagram hides a private account's posts from everyone who does not follow it, so there are no likes or comments to count. The tool tells you the account is private instead of guessing.
Where does the data come from?
From Virev's own crawl of public Instagram pages, the same database behind Virev creator search and the Virev API. An account we have not stored yet is read from Instagram when you look it up, and the result shows the date of the data it used.

Need this for a thousand accounts?

The Virev API returns the same profile and post numbers as JSON, priced per request.
