How the two rates are calculated
Per 100 followers: (likes + comments + shares) ÷ followers × 100, averaged over the 12 most recent videos. This is the rate most calculators report and the one brands have quoted for years.
Per 100 views: all likes, comments and shares in the same 12 videos ÷ all their plays × 100. TikTok's For You feed shows most videos to people who do not follow the account, so the follower rate measures reach as much as loyalty. The per-view rate measures what a viewer does once the video is on screen, and it barely moves with account size: the median is 7.7% to 9.1% in every tier of our data.
The median video is the middle value of the 12 follower-based rates. In our crawl the average-based rate is 2.3 to 4.6 times the median-video rate in every tier, because one video that the feed picks up carries the window. When the two differ by that much, the median is the number to put in a brief.
The percentile compares the account with 274,473 public TikTok accounts of 1,000+ followers in Virev's own crawl, each measured the same way on its 6 to 12 most recent videos (read Aug 13 to Oct 1, 2026).
What is a good TikTok engagement rate
By followers, it depends on size: the median is 18.3% at 1k to 10k followers and 1.0% above 1M, and 29% of 1k to 10k accounts are over 100%. By views it does not: the median is about 8 engagements per 100 plays at every size. The table is the distribution from our crawl, so "above the top quarter" means better than three accounts in four of that size.
| Followers | Accounts | Bottom quarter | Median | Top quarter | Median video | Per 100 views, median | Over 100% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1k to 10k | 95,719 | 3.66% | 18.30% | 143.81% | 4.27% | 9.0% | 29% |
| 10k to 50k | 67,857 | 1.64% | 8.58% | 38.79% | 1.86% | 7.7% | 12% |
| 50k to 100k | 26,420 | 1.07% | 4.73% | 17.66% | 1.25% | 7.7% | 4% |
| 100k to 500k | 50,600 | 0.69% | 2.64% | 8.46% | 0.87% | 8.0% | 1% |
| 500k to 1M | 14,496 | 0.50% | 1.65% | 4.45% | 0.63% | 8.5% | 0.2% |

Warning signs the tool checks
- Comments per 100 likes below the bottom 10% of the size tier. Likes are cheap to buy; comments are not.
- A follower change of 20% or more between two of our crawls less than 30 days apart.
- A mean at least twice the median, with the top video's share of the window's engagement printed.
- A follower rate over 100%, which is reach, not loyalty; missing play counts; no video in 90 days; fewer than 6 usable videos.
These are flags to check, not verdicts. A creator whose video went viral last month trips the skew check for a real reason.
Questions people ask
- How do you calculate TikTok engagement rate?
- Add the likes, comments and shares on a video, divide by the account's followers, multiply by 100, and average the last 12 videos. An account with 20,000 followers whose videos average 1,200 likes, 40 comments and 60 shares has (1,200 + 40 + 60) ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 6.5%. For the per-view rate, divide the same engagements by the videos' plays instead.
- What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?
- Above the median for the account's size. In Virev's crawl of 274,473 accounts the median by followers is 18.3% at 1k to 10k, 8.6% at 10k to 50k, 4.7% at 50k to 100k, 2.6% at 100k to 500k, 1.7% at 500k to 1M and 1.0% above 1M. By views the median is 7.7% to 9.1% at every size, so 10% per view is good for any account.
- Should TikTok engagement rate use followers or views?
- Both, for different questions. The follower rate is what most tools and rate cards use, and it rewards reach: a small account whose video hit the For You feed can show 300%. The per-view rate tells you what viewers do once a video is on screen and is stable across sizes. This tool shows both with the percentile for each.
- Why is a TikTok engagement rate over 100%?
- Because the denominator is followers and most views come from people who do not follow the account. 29% of accounts with 1k to 10k followers in our data have an average-based rate above 100%, and 77% of them had at least one of their last 12 videos reach more plays than they have followers. Quote the per-view rate or the median video for those accounts.
- How many videos does the calculator use?
- The 12 most recent videos for the rates and the percentile, the same window as the benchmark, and up to 30 for the chart. Videos with no like count are skipped. The median is the middle of the 12 rates, and the top video's share of the window's engagement is printed so you can see how much one video carries.
- Where does the data come from?
- From Virev's own crawl of public TikTok pages, the same database behind Virev creator search and the Virev API: 274,473 public accounts with 1,000+ followers and 3.2 million videos read between Aug 13 and Oct 1, 2026. The result shows the date of the data it used. An account we have not stored is read from TikTok live while the day's live-lookup budget lasts.
