Plan an Instagram giveaway without unclear promises

Settle eligibility, prize details, winner selection and delivery before a creator posts an Instagram giveaway. Use an intake checklist for local review.

Four separated giveaway planning objects: an eligibility gate, a defined prize box, a draw drum and a delivery parcel.

Before a creator announces an Instagram giveaway, settle who runs it, who can enter, what the prize includes, how the winner is chosen, and who delivers it. Put those decisions into a promotion intake record. Then have the promotion reviewed for each eligible jurisdiction and check Instagram's current rules before approving the creator's post.

A caption cannot resolve an undecided shipping boundary or selection method. The checklist below is an operational brief for that review, not a universal legal template.

Name the promoter and the eligible markets first

Write down the legal entity responsible for the promotion, the creator's role, and the person who can resolve entrant complaints. Assign a separate owner for winner selection and prize delivery if needed. A creator who publishes the announcement should know where to send a disputed entry or missing-parcel question.

Instagram's Promotion Guidelines place responsibility for lawful operation on the organizer. They include official rules, offer terms, eligibility requirements and compliance with applicable regulations, including required approvals. Instagram also says it will not help administer the promotion.

Choose eligible countries or territories before commissioning creative. Ask a qualified local reviewer to assess the proposed entry method, age limits, prize, purchase conditions, registration requirements and any required disclosures. Keep their approval tied to the final rules and creative version.

For example, the UK CAP Code's promotional marketing section recommends legal advice about prize promotions and distinguishes the legislation for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. A previous campaign's approval should not be treated as permission to open the next giveaway worldwide.

Use the creator contract discussion checklist to assign responsibility for approvals, participant support and the creator's deliverables before work starts.

Complete this Instagram creator giveaway checklist

Give every row an answer and an owner. Treat an unanswered row as a reason to delay the announcement.

DecisionWhat the intake record must settle
PromoterResponsible entity, contact address and complaint owner
EligibilityIncluded locations, minimum age and any excluded groups
Entry actionExact action, entry limit, duplicate handling and invalid-entry criteria
TimingOpening and closing dates, clock times and time zone
PrizeQuantity, model or variant, contents, stated value basis and exclusions
SelectionRandom draw or judged competition, method, operator and evidence retained
NotificationSending account, contact method, response period and unclaimed-prize procedure
DeliveryStock reservation, shipping territory, costs, dispatch commitment and failed-delivery owner
DataDetails collected, purpose, access, retention and winner-publication plan for review
ApprovalLocal review, current platform-policy review and final creative sign-off

These are recommended planning fields. Particular legal and platform requirements depend on the promotion.

Later's giveaway guide also highlights country restrictions, age limits and the closing time zone. Use those questions before writing the invitation. Leave growth forecasts out of the entry promise: participation does not guarantee followers, sales or a prize for each entrant.

Make the prize description survive a fulfillment check

Have the person dispatching the prize read the description. Can they identify the exact item and every included accessory? If entrants choose a size or color, decide which options are available and how the choice is collected. Ask the reviewer how to state exclusions and any permitted substitution.

Avoid an undefined phrase such as "a year's supply." Specify the quantity, delivery schedule and contents. If the prize includes travel, subscriptions or services, send the dates, access restrictions and additional costs for review before the creator describes the experience.

Confirm stock and shipping arrangements before publication. A screenshot of an available product page is not a stock reservation.

Choose an entry action you can verify

Write a sample valid entry and sample reasons for rejection. Decide whether repeated comments count, how edits are treated, and whether the team can verify every required action using its authorized access. Remove conditions the team cannot check consistently.

Instagram's promotion rules prohibit inaccurate content tagging and encouraging people to do it. Do not ask entrants to tag themselves in a photograph they do not appear in. Review the proposed entry action itself rather than copying it from another giveaway.

If entrants submit photos or videos, send the proposed reuse terms for review. Instagram explicitly declines to advise organizers about obtaining consent to use user content. Keep entry permission and any later advertising use clearly specified.

Decide what selection evidence you will keep

For a random draw, document how the team will produce the eligible-entry list, remove duplicates under the stated rules, select a winner and retain the result. Test the chosen method before launch. A tool's name alone does not explain its handling of missing entries or invalid entries.

For a judged competition, write the criteria and tie-break procedure before entries arrive. Name the judges and check conflicts. Do not publish a random-draw promise and later choose the comment the brand likes best.

Requirements can be specific. Under the UK CAP Code, rules 8.24 and 8.26, prize draws need a verifiably random computer process or independent selection or supervision. Subjectively judged competitions need an independent judge or a panel with an independent member. These are UK code requirements, not a worldwide checklist.

Have the reviewer approve winner notification, response deadlines, unclaimed prizes and publication details together. The same UK code addresses making award information available while protecting winner privacy. Avoid improvising a request for a public address or identity document in a comment thread.

Resolve a vague promise before it reaches the creator

The following example is hypothetical. Its decisions illustrate an internal intake record; they do not establish a legally compliant promotion.

Vague proposalDecision to record before local review
"Win our full collection"One winner receives one named set, with its contents listed
"Open to everyone"Proposed entry territory matches the confirmed delivery territory
"Ends Friday"Closing date, time and time zone appear consistently in all creative
"We'll pick someone"A documented random draw uses the checked eligible-entry list
"We'll DM you"One named account contacts the selected entrant under an approved response procedure
"We'll send it soon"The fulfillment owner confirms a dispatch deadline and support contact

Give the creator this resolved record alongside the Instagram creator brief. The creator can shape the presentation without inventing prize terms or changing the entry instructions.

Approve the public promise as a whole

Compare the caption, visual, spoken script, reminders and full rules side by side. They should agree on eligibility, entry action, deadline, prize and selection. Check that entrants can reach and keep the rules throughout the promotion.

Instagram requires a release of Instagram by entrants and an acknowledgement that Instagram does not sponsor, endorse, administer or associate with the promotion. Have the reviewer handle the wording and presentation of these requirements.

For a sponsored creator post, also resolve disclosure before publication. Meta's branded-content guidance includes compensation through free products or services and requires business-partner tagging where that exchange creates branded content. Confirm the applicable label, partner tag and local advertising disclosures for this collaboration.

Ask someone outside the planning team to read the proposed announcement and explain who can enter, what they could win and what happens afterward. Correct every answer that differs from the approved rules. Send the final intake record to the promotion reviewer and fulfillment owner, and hold the creator's publication until both approve it.
