Key findings
- Virev's October 2026 study of 2,979,130 TikToks from 272,101 accounts with 1,000+ followers found that the top 1% of videos starts at 2.8 million views.
- In the same study, the top 1% of 3,397,736 Instagram reels from 359,501 creators starts at 2.4 million views, and the median reel gets 9,730.
- In Virev's 2026 data, the viral bar depends on account size, and the top 1% starts at 1.4 million views for TikTok creators with 1,000 to 10,000 followers and at 8.7 million for creators with over 1 million.
- Virev's 2026 data shows that a TikTok creator with 1,000 to 10,000 followers is 6 times as likely as an Instagram creator of the same size to pass 1 million views (1.4% of videos against 0.24%).
- In Virev's 2026 study, 1 in 16 TikToks and 1 in 30 reels got at least 10 times the views of their creator's median video.
A video is viral when it reaches the top 1% of views on its platform. In our data that line sits at 2.8 million views on TikTok and 2.4 million on Instagram Reels. We read the view counts of 2,979,130 recent TikToks and 3,397,736 recent reels from public accounts with 1,000 or more followers. Half of all TikToks got fewer than 8,842 views, and half of all reels fewer than 9,730.
The bar moves with the size of the account. For a TikTok creator with 1,000 to 10,000 followers, the top 1% starts at 1.4 million views. For an Instagram creator of that size, it starts at 283,000. For accounts with over a million followers, it is 8.7 million on TikTok and 13.5 million on Reels.
Most pages that rank for this question give one round number, often 1 million views in 24 to 72 hours, without a count behind it. viral.app is the exception, since it measured 3.3 million videos from accounts its customers track. Our sample covers 631,602 accounts with 1,000 or more followers. It adds the viral bar as a multiple of followers, the bar by video age, the share of top videos that look like paid ads, and five named creators whose one video went past 18 million views.

Journalists may quote these numbers with a link. The TikTok sample is 2,979,130 videos from 272,101 public accounts with 1,000+ followers, up to the 12 latest videos per account, posted February 15 to September 27, 2026 and read by Virev's crawler from August 13 to October 1, 2026. The Instagram sample is 3,397,736 reels from 359,501 public creator accounts with 1,000+ followers, up to the 12 latest reels per creator, posted August 19, 2025 to September 29, 2026. Every video was at least 3 days old when we read it. Our crawler collects accounts for creator marketing, so read each tier against itself. Download the tables as how-many-views-is-viral-2026.csv. How many views is viral on TikTok and Instagram
We sorted every video by its views and read where the top 10%, the top 1% and the top 0.1% start.
| Platform | Top 1% from | Top 0.1% from | Top 10% from | Median video | Reach 1M views | Videos | Accounts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 2.8M | 12.9M | 321K | 8,842 | 1 in 28 | 2,979,130 | 272,101 |
| Instagram reels | 2.4M | 12.4M | 225K | 9,730 | 1 in 36 | 3,397,736 | 359,501 |
- The two platforms look alike from the middle to the top. Half of all videos pass about 9,000 views on both, and the top 1% starts between 2.4 and 2.8 million.
- 1 in 28 TikToks reached a million views, and 1 in 36 reels.
- The top 0.1%, 1 video in 1,000, starts near 12 to 13 million views on both platforms.
So "1 million views" is a fair round number for a hit, but it is not rare enough to be the top 1% for accounts with 1,000 or more followers. About 3% of their videos get there.
Is 10K, 100K or 1M views viral?
This table shows how many videos reach a given view count, across all accounts in the sample.
| Views | TikToks at or above | Reels at or above |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 80.9% | 88.6% |
| 10,000 | 48.2% | 49.5% |
| 50,000 | 27.3% | 25.2% |
| 100,000 | 20.0% | 17.3% |
| 500,000 | 6.9% | 5.3% |
| 1,000,000 | 3.5% | 2.8% |
| 5,000,000 | 0.45% | 0.38% |
| 10,000,000 | 0.15% | 0.14% |
- 10,000 views is a median video for accounts with 1,000 or more followers. About half of all TikToks and reels get there.
- 100,000 views puts a video in the top 20% of TikToks and the top 17% of reels. That is a good video, and the top-1% bar on TikTok is 28 times higher.
- 1 million views is a top-3.5% TikTok and a top-2.8% reel.

What the tables show:
- On TikTok, small accounts break out far more often than on Instagram. A nano TikTok has a 1.4% chance of passing a million views, and a nano reel 0.24%, so TikTok gives them about 6 times the odds.
- On Instagram, follower count matters more. The median reel from a mega account gets 123 times the views of the median nano reel (282,689 against 2,305). On TikTok the gap is 95 times.
- Above 100,000 followers, Instagram's bar is the higher one. The top 1% of mega reels starts at 13.5 million views, and of mega TikToks at 8.7 million.
TikTok says a video from an account with more followers is likely to get more views, but that follower count is not a direct factor in its For You recommendations. Our tables match both parts. Bigger accounts have higher medians, and nano TikToks still break out 6 times as often as nano reels.
Viral as a multiple of your followers
Another way to set the bar is views divided by the account's followers. In this table, 76x means 76 times the account's follower count.
| Followers | TikTok top 1% from | Reels top 1% from | TikTok median video | Reels median video |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano, 1K-10K | 492x | 76x | 0.59x | 0.66x |
| Micro, 10K-100K | 76x | 35x | 0.29x | 0.33x |
| Mid, 100K-500K | 15x | 14x | 0.14x | 0.23x |
| Macro, 500K-1M | 6.1x | 7.9x | 0.10x | 0.19x |
| Mega, 1M+ | 3.2x | 5.3x | 0.07x | 0.14x |
- The median video in every tier gets fewer views than the account has followers. Only 28% of TikToks and 27% of reels in our sample beat their account's follower count.
- For a creator with 3,000 followers, a top-1% TikTok gets about 500 times that count, or 1.5 million views. On Instagram it gets about 76 times, or 230,000.
- For a creator with 2 million followers, a top-1% TikTok gets about 3.2 times that count, or 6.3 million views. A top-1% reel gets about 5.3 times, or 10.6 million plays.
The better test: 10 times your own median
Tier tables tell you how rare a number is among accounts like yours. To judge one video, compare it with your own normal. We took each account's median video (the middle one when you sort its videos by views) and counted the videos that beat it by 3 and by 10 times. We used accounts with 6 or more videos in the sample.
| Followers | TikToks at 3x own median | TikToks at 10x | Reels at 3x own median | Reels at 10x |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All accounts | 15.9% | 6.4% | 11.8% | 3.3% |
| Nano, 1K-10K | 14.8% | 7.0% | 11.1% | 3.2% |
| Micro, 10K-100K | 17.0% | 6.9% | 12.3% | 3.6% |
| Mid, 100K-500K | 16.4% | 5.6% | 12.3% | 3.1% |
| Macro, 500K-1M | 15.7% | 4.7% | 11.3% | 2.3% |
| Mega, 1M+ | 15.0% | 4.0% | 10.8% | 2.1% |
- About 1 in 16 TikToks and 1 in 30 reels reached 10 times their creator's median.
- 47% of TikTok accounts had at least one such video among their latest 12. On Instagram, 26% of creators did.
- TikTok views swing more from one video to the next than reel views do, and the swing shrinks as accounts grow.
To use this on your own account, take your last 12 videos that are at least a week old, find the middle one by views, and multiply it by 10. A video above that number went viral for you. To check any public TikTok account, the free TikTok engagement rate calculator reads its last 12 videos.

- Zach's TikTok about Robert Pattinson in The Odyssey, posted July 17, 2026, had 18.6 million views at our read and 20.2 million on October 14, with 3.1 million likes. His other 10 videos in our sample got 1,335 to 54,600 views. His profile showed 1,876 followers on October 14.
- @notnadialy's "Speaking meow" cat video from March 7, 2026 had 47.5 million views at our read and 48.6 million on October 14, with 7.9 million likes and 2.1 million shares. Her other 8 videos got 679 to 11,200 views, and she had 8,233 followers on October 14.
- @laurajw8's "When the little sister finally snaps" had 21.5 million views when we read it 8 days after posting. On October 14 it showed 34.2 million, so it gained 59% after day 8. Her other videos got 6,146 to 137,200 views.
- MIRI, a singer whose profile names Berklee College of Music, posted a reel of a crowd singing happy birthday on June 11, 2026. It had 41.5 million plays and 5.7 million likes at our read. Her next best reel had 225,591 plays, and her profile showed 11.6K followers on October 14.
- Chelsea Toy, a team roper, posted a birthday reel for a friend on January 8, 2026. It had 21.1 million plays and 1.1 million likes at our read, against 2,439 to 22,089 plays for her other 4 reels.
Each of these videos is in the top 0.1% of its whole platform. None of the five accounts had more than 12,000 followers on October 14, months after the video, so one viral video did not turn into a large following for any of them.
Views keep coming after the first week
A video's view count grows after posting, so the bar depends on when you look. We split the sample by the video's age when we read it.
| Age at our read | TikTok top 1% from | Reels top 1% from | TikToks | Reels |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3-6 days | 2.0M | 1.4M | 852,328 | 397,222 |
| 7-13 days | 2.3M | 1.7M | 724,742 | 533,999 |
| 14-29 days | 3.0M | 2.1M | 631,887 | 709,600 |
| 30-89 days | 4.1M | 2.7M | 559,150 | 981,046 |
| 90+ days | 5.0M | 3.5M | 211,023 | 775,869 |
- The top-1% bar for TikToks that were 30 to 89 days old is twice the bar for TikToks 3 to 6 days old (4.1 million against 2.0 million).
- Median views do not rise with age (8,842 overall on TikTok, 5,393 for TikToks 90+ days old), so the rise comes from the top videos, which keep getting views for weeks.
- To judge a video, wait at least a week, and compare it with videos of the same age.
What to do with this
For creators
- Judge each video against your own median. 10 times your median is a viral video for your account, and about 1 in 16 TikToks gets there.
- Use the tier table to see how rare a number is for accounts your size. For a creator with 1,000 to 10,000 followers, 58,200 TikTok views or 21,154 reel plays is a top-10% video.
- Expect little money from views alone. Our TikTok pay study found a median $0.40 per 1,000 views in the Creator Rewards Program, so a 2.8 million view video pays about $1,120 if it qualifies.
- For what moves views on each app, see our TikTok algorithm study and Instagram algorithm study. On Instagram, Collab posts got 1.52 times the views of the same creator's own reels.
For brands
- Do not pick a creator for one viral video. The five creators above had medians of 2,581 to 89,600 views next to their hits. Book on the median, and treat a breakout as a bonus.
- Ask for the median of the last 12 videos, and compare it with the tier table. For a micro TikTok creator, a median above 8,928 views beats the median video from creators that size.
- For engagement by follower count, see our TikTok engagement rate benchmarks.
- Virev creator search covers 180M+ creators and shows each one's recent videos with views, so you can find creators whose videos go viral more than once. Start a 3-day trial to run your first search.

- The TikTok sample is up to the 12 latest videos of each public TikTok account with 1,000 or more followers, posted 3 to 180 days before Virev's crawler read the account between August 13 and October 1, 2026. Videos were posted February 15 to September 27, 2026. We removed accounts our profile model labels as brands, businesses, media, organizations or government, and videos with zero views. That leaves 2,979,130 videos from 272,101 accounts.
- TikTok shows views above 10,000 rounded (for example 2.8M), and we store them as shown, so TikTok thresholds come out as round numbers.
- The Instagram sample is up to the 12 latest reels of each public creator account with 1,000 or more followers, from the reels set of our Instagram algorithm study. Brands, shops and media were removed there by profile label and Instagram category. Reels were posted August 19, 2025 to September 29, 2026, were at least 3 days old at our read, and are counted by Instagram's public play count. That leaves 3,397,736 reels from 359,501 creators.
- Follower counts are from our read, which came after most videos were posted. A viral video can add followers, so some accounts sit one tier above where they were when they posted.
- Our crawler collects accounts for creator marketing, so the sample holds more active creators than each app as a whole, and no account under 1,000 followers. That is why our thresholds are higher than viral.app's (807,000 for the top 1% of TikToks), which include accounts of every size.
- The median video in our TikTok sample was 12 days old at the read, and in the Instagram sample 31 days. Thresholds rise with age, as the age table shows. Older videos in the TikTok sample come from accounts that post less often, because we keep only the latest 12.
- Some top videos are paid ads. 11% of the top-1% TikToks and 12.5% of the top-1% reels had fewer than 1 like per 200 views, a pattern of promoted posts. Without them, the top 1% starts at 2.6 million views on TikTok and 2.2 million on Reels.
- The 10x test uses accounts with 6 or more videos in the sample, and the account's median of those videos.
- Case counts at our read come from Virev's crawl. We checked the profiles and the TikTok view and like counts in the browser on October 14, 2026. Instagram does not show reel plays to logged-out visitors, so the reel plays are from our read only.
- This study does not cover YouTube, because the exports it uses hold TikTok and Instagram only.
