Read Instagram creator analytics before comparing posts

Separate public Instagram observations from creator-shared insights. Use a dated request and comparison worksheet to judge audience fit and post performance.

Two open viewing frames and a creator-held translucent panel align over paired tiles, illustrating public observations and shared analytics compared on equal terms.

Instagram creator analytics can support a partnership decision when they show who saw relevant content, how those accounts responded, and whether comparable posts performed consistently. Start with public posts to judge creative fit. Then ask the creator to share dated insights for a defined set of posts. Keep the report's metric labels, audience basis and measurement period attached to every number before you compare candidates.

A high view count alone cannot answer whether a creator reaches your buyers. A screenshot of follower locations cannot establish where one sponsored Reel's viewers live. Each report answers a narrower question.

Separate what you observe from what the creator shares

Use two evidence columns in your shortlist:

EvidenceWhat to recordDecision it can support
Public observationPost URL, topic, format, visible counts and observation dateWhether the creator makes relevant work and how viewers discuss it
Creator-shared insightsOriginal metric labels, post identity, date range, capture date and report contextWhether measured audience and response fit the campaign

Do not fill missing saves, audience demographics or watch time with estimates presented as native Instagram data. If a number came from a third-party estimate, keep that provenance separate from a creator-shared report.

Instagram's current Help Center says public accounts can access insights for their own content. That includes public accounts beyond professional accounts. It does not mean a brand viewing a public profile receives the creator's insight reports. Ask the creator to share the relevant evidence voluntarily; this workflow needs no password exchange.

The distinction matters when reading older guides. Later's Instagram analytics guide recommends choosing metrics according to the business goal. That remains a useful starting point. Its professional-account-only statement about native insights differs from Meta's current documentation, so use Meta for current access conditions.

Read the label before choosing the number

These definitions follow Meta documentation read on September 27, 2026. Check the information icon in the creator's report when labels differ. Meta describes Views as a gradual rollout and flags some audience metrics as estimated and in development.

Report labelMeaning in Meta's documentationWhat to avoid concluding
ViewsTimes content was played or displayed; Reel views include starts and replaysThat every view represents a different account
ViewersUnique accounts that saw content on screen at least onceThat every Reel viewer played or finished the video
InteractionsActions such as likes, comments, saves and sharesThat each action came from a different person
Accounts engagedUnique accounts that interactedThat every engaged account intends to purchase
Reel watch timeTotal playback time, including replaysThat the total measures completed views
Reel average watch timeWatch time divided by initial viewsThat dividing by all views reproduces the native metric

The first four definitions come from About Instagram insights. The playback definitions come from Meta's Reel insights documentation.

Preserve an older report's label if it says Accounts reached or Impressions. Do not silently rename it Viewers or Views to make a spreadsheet look consistent. Compare only after confirming the definitions match. For campaign reports containing several labels, use the separate guide to reach, impressions and views.

Audience summaries also need a named population. Followers, viewers and accounts engaged describe different groups. Meta's overview documentation ties viewer demographics to preset periods and reaching over 100 accounts. Engaged-audience demographics require engaging over 100 accounts. Follower trends require at least 100 followers. A missing demographic panel should become "unavailable," rather than zero or an inferred mismatch.

Send an insights request with a selection rule

The following is an illustrative request for a hypothetical homeware campaign. Six posts and seven-day captures are editorial recommendations for this example, not Instagram requirements.

We are considering a product-demonstration Reel for a UK homeware campaign. Please share insights for your six most recent organic product-demonstration Reels published before September 20, 2026. Include sponsored examples if they fit that description, and identify them.

For each Reel, please include its URL, publication date, video length, capture date, Views, Viewers, Interactions and any available interaction breakdown. Please include watch time and average watch time where available, preserving Instagram's labels.

If you saved a report seven days after publication, please share that version. Otherwise, send the current report and its capture date. Please identify any paid promotion or combined paid and organic totals.

Please also share the viewer-location summary for the preset Last 30 days period, with the dates and population label visible. If that panel is unavailable, say so. You can remove unrelated account information.

Each detail closes a specific gap:

  • Selection rule. The most recent qualifying posts reduce reliance on a creator's best-ever result. Request the full qualifying set before selecting examples.
  • Capture age. A current total for an older Reel has had longer to accumulate than a seven-day total.
  • Promotion context. Paid distribution can change the result. Unknown promotion status limits an organic comparison.
  • Audience basis. A recent account-level viewer summary provides context. It does not establish the audience composition of each Reel.

As of September 27, 2026, Meta's documented Reel path is the profile's Reels tab, then the selected Reel, then View insights. This is a documentation-based walkthrough. Ask creators to use the equivalent report available in their interface.

For a deeper audience decision, assess audience fit before follower count. Keep that assessment separate from the post-performance worksheet.

Compare posts only after checking the conditions

Create one row per post. Include format, subject, duration, sponsored status, paid promotion, publication time, capture time and metric labels. Mark each row comparable, provisional or excluded, with a reason.

The following worksheet contains hypothetical data for two distinct Reels from one creator. Both are organic 20-second product demonstrations, captured seven days after publication. Neither had paid promotion. These numbers illustrate the calculation only.

FieldReel AReel B
Views12,0009,000
Viewers8,0007,500
Accounts engaged400450
Interactions520600
Accounts engaged / Viewers5.0%6.0%
Comparison statusComparableComparable

The calculated ratio is 400 divided by 8,000 for A, and 450 divided by 7,500 for B. It is a worksheet measure with an explicit denominator, not a claimed Instagram default engagement rate.

Reel A has more views and more viewers. Reel B has more engaged accounts and a higher engaged-account share. Neither row establishes sales, purchase intent or how either Reel would perform for a different brand. If the brief prioritizes unique exposure, A supplies stronger evidence on that measure. If it prioritizes observed interaction, B warrants closer creative review.

For the six-post request, retain all qualifying rows. Inspect the spread and the median of each comparable metric. Do not let one unusually large result become the expected campaign outcome. Use the denominator guide before comparing this worksheet ratio with a vendor's engagement rate.

Decide what the evidence permits

Advance a creator when relevant creative work and comparable reports support the brief's audience and response goals. Ask a follow-up when labels, dates or promotion status are missing. Keep a candidate provisional when you have only a highlight report or mismatched post ages.

For a sales objective, add campaign-specific conversion measurement to the plan. Native views and interactions alone cannot establish a sale. Avoid promising revenue from a pre-campaign insights review.

Before sending the request, write one decision sentence: "We need evidence that this creator reaches our intended audience with product demonstrations people respond to." Then choose the report fields needed to answer it, and remove everything else from the request.
