Key findings
- In Virev's 2026 study of 4,489,696 Instagram posts from 391,665 accounts with 1,000+ followers, the median caption was 158 characters, 137 for reels and about 235 for photos and carousels.
- In Virev's 2026 study of 1,094,471 TikTok posts from 59,542 accounts with 1,000+ followers, the median caption was 56 characters, and with hashtags and @mentions taken out only 17.
- In Virev's 2026 data, an Instagram photo with a caption over 1,000 characters got 1.36x the likes of the same account's photos with a 51 to 100 character caption, and a carousel got 1.20x.
- In Virev's 2026 data, reel views stayed within 0.96x to 1.06x of the same account's 51 to 100 character reels for captions of 21 to 1,000 characters.
- In Virev's 2026 data, a post with no caption got 0.84x to 0.91x of the views or likes of the same account's posts with a 51 to 100 character caption, on every Instagram format and on TikTok.
The median Instagram caption is 158 characters, about two sentences, in 4,489,696 posts by accounts with 1,000 or more followers posted from July 1 to October 14, 2026. The median TikTok caption is 56 characters, and most of that is hashtags. Then we compared each post with the same account's other posts of the same format. Longer captions came with more likes on photos and carousels and more views on TikTok. On reels, length barely mattered once a caption had a sentence in it. Every format did worse with no caption.
When we asked an OpenAI model "how long should an instagram caption be" on October 28, 2026, it answered "roughly 50 to 150 characters" and cited one Hootsuite guide of caption ideas. That guide calls "150-ish characters" a good benchmark with no sample behind it. The one page in Google's top 10 with its own data, Socialinsider's 2024 study, pooled 9.1 million posts from 82,952 business pages posted January to July 2023 and found that captions under 30 words had the highest engagement rate. This page measures 2026 posts by size of account and format, compares each post with the same account's own posts, and adds TikTok.

Average Instagram caption length in 2026
We counted the characters of each caption the way Instagram counts its 2,200 limit, with emoji, hashtags and @mentions included.
| Instagram posts | Posts | Median | Middle half | No caption | Over 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| All posts | 4,489,696 | 158 | 56 - 411 | 6.0% | 5.4% |
| Reels | 2,245,440 | 137 | 59 - 355 | 5.8% | 4.0% |
| Single images | 806,983 | 239 | 80 - 504 | 7.3% | 7.0% |
| Carousels | 920,261 | 234 | 75 - 520 | 2.8% | 8.0% |
Reels carry the shortest captions, a median of 137 characters, because the video does the talking. Photos and carousels carry about 100 characters more. 517,012 posts in the sample have no known format and are counted only in the first row.
Taken out of the caption, hashtags and @mentions leave a median of 120 characters of text. The median reel caption has 3 hashtags, while the median photo or carousel has none.
Instagram shows about the first 125 characters of a caption before the "more" link. 44% of captions fit in that space, including the 6.0% with no caption at all.
Accounts that post often write longer captions. The median of each account's own median caption is 96 characters, below the 158 of the median post.
Instagram caption length by follower count
| Followers | Instagram median | No caption | TikTok median | No caption |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1K to 10K | 145 | 7.1% | 51 | 21.8% |
| 10K to 100K | 183 | 4.1% | 64 | 13.8% |
| 100K to 500K | 179 | 3.6% | 65 | 9.9% |
| 500K to 1M | 180 | 3.6% | 58 | 11.0% |
| 1M+ | 182 | 2.7% | 55 | 10.5% |
Accounts under 10,000 followers write the shortest captions on both apps and skip the caption most often. Above 10,000 followers the median hardly moves, 179 to 183 characters on Instagram and 55 to 65 on TikTok.

To test length, we compared each post with posts by the same account in the same format, so a big account's long captions never meet a small account's short ones. The baseline is the same account's posts with a 51 to 100 character caption, about one sentence. We held the post's age at the read and the week it went up equal, and left out sponsored posts, ads, giveaways and Collab posts. Reels are measured by views and likes. Photos and carousels show no view count, so they are measured by likes.
| Caption length | Reel views | Reel likes | Carousel likes | Single image likes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| None | 0.88x | 0.87x | 0.91x | 0.89x |
| 1-20 | 0.92x | 0.94x | 0.99x | 1.00x |
| 21-50 | 0.96x | 0.96x | 1.00x | 0.99x |
| 51-100 | 1.00x | 1.00x | 1.00x | 1.00x |
| 101-150 | 1.02x | 1.00x | 1.04x | 1.01x |
| 151-300 | 1.02x | 0.99x | 1.06x | 1.05x |
| 301-500 | 1.01x | 0.99x | 1.10x | 1.16x |
| 501-1,000 | 1.06x | 1.03x | 1.14x | 1.25x |
| 1,001+ | 1.11x | 1.04x | 1.20x | 1.36x |
On photos and carousels, likes rose with every step past 150 characters. A single image with a caption over 1,000 characters got 1.36x the likes of the same account's one-sentence photos (95% interval 1.24x to 1.49x). A carousel got 1.20x (1.11x to 1.29x). A photo has nothing to watch, so the caption is where people spend time with the post.
Reels moved much less. From 21 to 1,000 characters, views stayed within 0.96x to 1.06x, and likes within 0.96x to 1.03x. Only captions over 1,000 characters pulled ahead, at 1.11x views.
No caption cost every format, 0.88x views on reels and 0.89x to 0.91x likes on photos and carousels. Posts with no caption are also more often reposts and quick uploads, so part of that gap is the post and not the missing words.
Hashtags do not explain the result. When we measured length with hashtags and @mentions taken out, a single image with over 1,000 characters of text got 1.39x the likes, a carousel 1.17x and a reel 1.10x the views.
Why pooled caption studies say shorter is better
Socialinsider found that shorter captions had the highest engagement rate. Our data shows the same thing when every post goes into one pool. Carousels with a 1 to 20 character caption got a median 3.61 likes per 100 followers, and carousels with 501 to 1,000 characters got 0.71.
| Caption length | Carousel likes per 100 followers | Median followers |
|---|---|---|
| 1-20 | 3.61 | 4,158 |
| 51-100 | 1.57 | 6,957 |
| 151-300 | 0.85 | 9,048 |
| 501-1,000 | 0.71 | 8,739 |
The accounts are different. Long captions come more often from bigger accounts, and bigger accounts get fewer likes per follower on everything they post. Size is not the whole gap, because among accounts with 1,000 to 10,000 followers alone, carousel likes per follower still fall as captions get longer. Compared with their own posts, the same accounts got more likes on their longer captions. A pooled average answers "which accounts write short captions", and a same-account comparison answers "what happens when I write a longer one".
Does the caption effect change with follower count
| Followers | Reel views, no caption | Reel views, 1,001+ | Photo likes, 301-500 | Photo likes, 1,001+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1K to 10K | 0.80x | 1.13x | 1.12x | 1.25x |
| 10K to 100K | 0.87x | 1.19x | 1.10x | 1.21x |
| 100K to 500K | 1.26x | 1.13x | 1.25x | 1.76x |
| 500K to 1M | 0.96x | 1.08x | 1.48x | 1.56x |
| 1M+ | 0.95x | 0.93x | 1.16x | 1.44x |
All against the same account's posts with a 51 to 100 character caption. The photo gain holds at every size, from 1.21x to 1.76x at over 1,000 characters. The reel gain fades with size, and above 500,000 followers reel views barely move with caption length. The 1.26x for reels with no caption at 100,000 to 500,000 followers rests on 4,190 reels from 351 accounts, and its 95% interval runs from 0.94x to 1.68x.

| 1,001+ | 0.6% | 1.18x | 1.11x | 1.22x |
TikTok captions are short. The median is 56 characters, 59 on videos and 38 on photo posts, and 18.5% of posts have none. Take out hashtags and @mentions and the median caption has 17 characters of words, so most TikTok captions are a few tags and little else.
The longer captions did better. Against the same account's videos with a 51 to 100 character caption, a video with no caption got 0.84x the views, and a video with 501 to 1,000 characters got 1.17x (95% interval 1.12x to 1.21x). Only 5% of TikTok posts have a caption over 300 characters. TikTok search matches the words in a caption, and long captions often belong to recipes, tutorials and stories.
The gain is largest for accounts with 10,000 to 100,000 followers, 1.20x at 501 to 1,000 characters. Above 1 million followers, views stayed between 0.94x and 1.01x at every length, and likes fell to 0.74x to 0.80x on captions over 300 characters.
How this compares with our algorithm studies
Our Instagram algorithm study found that a reel with no caption got 0.82x the views of one with a 21 to 100 character caption, that views stayed within 1% from 21 to 1,000 characters, and that captions over 1,000 characters got 1.11x. This page lands at 0.88x for no caption, 0.96x to 1.06x from 21 to 1,000 characters, and the same 1.11x over 1,000. The algorithm study used older reels from August 2025 to September 2026 and one model that also held reel length, hashtags, Collabs and timing fixed, so a few points of difference are expected.
Our TikTok algorithm study found 0.88x for no caption, 1.10x for 101 to 200 characters and 1.18x for 500 or more, against a 26 to 50 character caption. Against a similar 21 to 50 character baseline, this page gives 0.92x for no caption, 1.19x for 151 to 300 and 1.27x for 501 to 1,000. At the long end the steps here are a little larger, and at no caption a little smaller. This model does not hold video length, sound and hashtags fixed, and long captions go with long videos, a median 38 seconds at 501 to 1,000 characters against 23 seconds at 51 to 100. When we added video length and hashtag count to this model, the long-caption steps shrank by a few points.
Our hashtag study measures the tags inside the caption on their own.
How long should your caption be
- Always write a caption. No caption cost 9% to 16% of the views or likes on every format we measured.
- On a photo or a carousel, write more than you think. Likes rose at every step past 150 characters, to 1.36x on photos and 1.20x on carousels over 1,000 characters.
- On a reel, one or two real sentences are enough. Between 21 and 1,000 characters, views moved by 6% or less.
- On TikTok, write words and not only tags. The median TikTok caption has 17 characters of text, and videos with 101 to 300 characters got 1.06x to 1.10x the views.
- Put the point in the first 125 characters, because that is about what Instagram shows before "more".

- The Instagram accounts are a 1% block sample of every account in Virev's Instagram census whose latest read showed 1,000 or more followers. We ranked the accounts by id and kept 1,000 in a row out of every 100,000, which gave 668,000 accounts, and 391,665 of them had a post in the period whose caption field our crawler read. Because few sampled accounts have 500,000 or more followers, we added 20% of all such accounts, 29,651 with posts, for the two top tiers.
- The TikTok accounts are a 1% sample of the TikTok accounts with 1,000 or more followers in Virev's crawler database, and a 10% sample of those with 500,000 or more for the two top tiers.
- Each post's caption is the last caption Virev's crawler read for it. Caption length counts characters, with each emoji and each letter of any alphabet as one.
- We checked the length by hand on 30 Instagram posts against the caption on the post's own Instagram page, and on 30 TikTok posts against TikTok's embed page. All 60 matched to the character, including 20 posts with no caption. We also read 400 Instagram posts with an empty caption in every other read we hold, and none of them had a caption in any read.
- The format comes from Instagram's own media type. A reel is a "clips" post, a carousel a carousel post and a single image a feed post. A TikTok photo post is one with a duration of 0.
- The likes, views and comments come from the last read at least 7 days after posting. The model compares log views or log likes within each account and format, with 4 age-at-read bands and the posting week held equal. A multiplier is the exponent of the model coefficient, and the CSV holds 95% intervals clustered by account.
- An account needs 5 or more posts of a format and at least two caption lengths to count in the comparison. That keeps 45,496 accounts for reel views and 39,450 for TikTok video views.
- We left out posts with Instagram's paid partnership label, an ad tag like #ad, a giveaway caption, or a Collab co-author, with the same word lists our algorithm studies use.
- This is an observational study. Creators choose when to write a long caption, often for a launch, a story or a tutorial, and those posts differ in more ways than the caption. The comparison shows which posts did better, not that adding words would lift the same post by that much.
- We could not measure saves, shares or reach on Instagram, how many people tapped "more", or what the caption said. Hooks, questions, calls to action and emoji count are not in this study.
- The sample is the set of accounts Virev crawls, which leans toward accounts brands look at, and is not a random draw from all of Instagram or TikTok.
